Philippines History - June 1 & 2

June 1

1963 - President Macapagal approved the construction of low-cost housing units along the railroad tracks in Pasig, Montalban and Sapang Palay by the Government Service Insurance System and their sale to squatters in Manila

1903 - The Philippine Commission established the Muslim provinces of Sulu, Lanao, Cotabato, Davao and Zamboanga. General Leonard Wood, former American Military Governor of Cuba, is appointed first governor.

1899 - Replying to an inquiry of the U.S. Secretary of War, General Otis telegraphs that he is of the opinion that 30,0 troops will be necessary for the subjugation of the Philippines

1899 - Filipino occupying the lines around San Fernando attack the outpost of General MacArthur's command.

1898 - From Kawit, Cavite, General Aguinaldo issues a decree providing that all kinds of crimes are to be tried by competent military tribunals and that the sentence to be imposed must first have his approval, as dictator. The decree is aimed at suppressing all disorder and imposing punitive measures for all crimes committed, especially treason and espionage.

1898 - Arthur MacArthur, appointed Brigadier-General of Volunteers, is ordered to proceed to the Philippines

1873 - Birth of Fernando Maria Guerrero, poet of the Revolution and member of the first Philippine Assembly, journalist, founder and editor of La Opinion. +Died on June 12, 1929.

1855 - Birth of Inigo Regalado y Corcuera, Tagalog poet and printer. +Died on September 2, 1896

1649 - Outbreak of the Sumuroy rebellion as a result of the conscription of Visayan laborers for shipbuilding work in Cavite

1596 - Don Francisco Tello de Guzman becomes governor-general of the Philippines. During his term the Royal Audiencia is re-established and the Jesuit Seminary of San Jose is founded

1590 - Gomez Perez Dasmarinas assumes office as governor-general. He is to be responsible for the construction of the walls of Intramuros of Fort Santiago.

1565 - From Cebu, the San Pedro is dispatched by Legazpi to Seville. This vessel, designed to be a showcase of Philippine goods and artifacts, carrier ginger, cinnamon, gold dust, the richest gold conchas and blancas (ancient copper coins), gold ornaments, plenty of wax, and many other articles

1565 - Five Augustinians arrive at Cebu to spread Christianity in that region.

1497 - Pope Alexander VI issues a bill declaring that the propagation of the Blessed Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the preaching of the Catholic faith should be the goal of the Spanish monarchs in their sponsored expeditions to territories outside the European continent.

June 2

1942 - President Manuel L. Quezon addresses the United States House of Represenatives on the Pacific War situation.

1899 - Lt. Saturnino Martin y Cerezo and his soldiers surrender the garrison at Baler, Tayabas, to the Filipino troops who have laid siege for more than one year. In recognition of their valor General Aguinaldo issues a decree permitting the Spanish defenders to go free.

1899 - Premier Pedro A. Paterno issues a proclamation of war against the United States after the Philippine Commission failed to secure a promise of cessation of hostilities from General Otis and the Schurman Commission.

1898 - Spanish General Leopoldo Garcia, with 9 infantry troops and 80 artillerymen with arms and ammunition, surrenders to the Filipino forces in Cavite.

1823 - Capitan Andres Novales, with the help of Lieutenant Ruiz, leads a mutiny against Spain and dies in the attempt.
